Serkos Haroutounian
President, ELGOReceived B.Sc. degree from the University of Patras and Ph.D. from the Agricultural University of Athens. After carrying out postdoctoral research at the University of Illinois and serving the Greek Navy, in 1989 he joined the AUA faculty (Lab. of Nutritional Physiology & Feeding). In 2018-19 he elected vice-rector of Academic affairs. His research interests concern the circular economy, natural products valorization, food chemistry and the development of novel pharmaceuticals and biocides. He has authored 155 publications in international scientific journals and books, with 4.000 literature citations. He is editor of the Journal of Chemistry and the International Journal of Functional Nutrition.
His research team has successfully implemented 32 projects funded by EC and Greece. He supervised DIONYSOS project that was honored by EC as best of the best environmental project of 2008. Currently he is involved in projects concerning circular economy (novel animal feeds), natural products (innovative products for cleaning natural heritage caves and statues), biocides (mosquito repellants), molecular cuisine (innovative olive oils and vinegars) and climate change (reduction of ruminants’ greenhouse gases emissions). He collaborates with regions and cooperatives of Greece on issues concerning the rural development, green agriculture and the promotion and certification (as PDO or PGI) of local products, such as wines, fava and tomato of Santorini, Tsipouro of Tyrnavos and cheeses “Kashkaval” – “Tsalafouti”.
