The symphony orchestra of the Department of Music Studies of the University of Ioannina, which is the first complete university symphony orchestra in Greece at a regional level, in collaboration with the Polyphonic Choir of Patras, come to highlight a rare cultural heritage originating from Greek musicians of the Ionian Islands of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. The Ionian Islands (Heptanese) were the center of development of the modern Greek music. Until Athens took precedence, the Ionian Islands were a special artistic peak of regional Hellenism due to their proximity to Italy and the previous Venetian Occupation. The first Greek symphonic music was created there, which unfortunately remains largely unknown to this day.
Music Composers such as Antonios Liveralis (1814-1842), Nikolaos Metaxas Tzanis (1824-1907), Dimitrios Andronis (1865-1918?) and Lavrentios Kamilieris (1875-1956) wrote masterpieces in the field of symphonic and dramatic music. The Department of Music Studies of the University of Ioannina, joining forces in research, musicology and performance, presents selected works of the aforementioned music composers for soloists and orchestra.
