Spiros Mourelatos
President & CEO , Ecodevelopment S.A.
Dr Spyridon Mourelatos is President and CEO of Ecodevelopment S.A. He is a graduate of the Department of Biology of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and holds a PhD in Hydrobiology from the P&M Curie University of Paris with significant experience in the field of environmental management and mosquito control programs since 1997, when he designed and organized the first large-scale mosquito control project in Greece after the end of the antimalarial fight in the 60s. He has contributed significantly to the control action against the outbreak of West Nile virus since 2010 and to the work for the mitigation of malaria re-establishment in the country. His scientific work has been published in a number of scientific and technical journals (64 publications, 1230 citations). He served as President of the European Mosquito Control Association (EMCA) in 2015-2016 and has been a World Health Organization (WHO) certified expert since 2018. He was member of the Ecodevelopment team, a core partner of the EYWA consortium (Early Warning System for Mosquito-borne Diseases), which was awarded the EU Innovation Council’s first prize for epidemics (EIC Prize); this work comprised the development and implementation of predictive models for mosquito abundance and epidemiological risk for WNV, using machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques for their use in preventive actions for mosquito borne diseases, mainly WNV. He has been repeatedly invited to international fora to present the experience of Ecodevelopment such as at the two-day high-level conference organized by the European Commission in February 2024 in Brussels, on “Impacts of climate change on health” and in 2019 at the expert meeting on behalf of WHO-Europe on “Technical consultation on Vector borne Diseases and control in the WHO European Region”, the results of the work of which were included in the relevant WHO manual (WHO 2019).
