I was born and raised in Keratsini and I come from Salamina. I studied at the Department of Informatics and Telecommunications of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and I hold a PhD from the same department. Today I serve as a professor of the Department of Informatics and Computer Engineering at the University of West Attica. My research activity is in the area of photonic systems for applications of modern communication networks, sensors and artificial intelligence. Based on the ranking of Stanford University in the USA, for five years now I have been included in the 2% of the most influential scientists worldwide. I am a principal researcher of national and European research programs as well as responsible for the support of thousands of school units and important services of the Panhellenic School Network. For many years, I have been a member of editorial boards of scientific journals and conferences with a high impact, and my research group has long-term collaborations with important research groups of major universities in EU.
I served as a consultant to the Ministry of Education, Research and Religious Affairs from 2017 to July 2019 and I was one of the main contributors to the reform of the Unified Higher Education Area in our country. I represented the country at the 39th UNESCO General Conference on issues related to higher education. I was a member of the Board of Directors of the National Research and Technology Network from January to July 2019 and an advisor to the think tank of the former president of SYRIZA Alexis Tsipras on issues of digital transition.
I am married to Maria, a professor of French literature, and we have two children, Giorgos and Kyriaki.
