Vangelis Meimarakis
Former President of Nea Dimokratia, Vice – Chair, EPP Group

Vangelis Meimarakis was born in Athens.
He is a graduate of the Athens Law School and a graduate in Political Science and Public Administration from the Panteion University of Political Sciences.
He is a lawyer at the Greek Supreme Court and a member of the Athens Bar Association.
His political career began as a founding member of the Nea Dimokratia Youth (ONNED). In 1984, he was elected President of ONNED.
In 1989 he was elected, for the first time, Member of the Hellenic Parliament and was continuously elected until 2019, when he was elected Member of the European Parliament.
He is the first-elected Secretary General of Nea Dimokratia.
During his political career, he served as:
– President of Nea Dimokratia
– ⁠President of the Hellenic Parliament, in a seven-party Parliament and a three-party coalition government.
– ⁠Minister of National Defense and Member of the Greek Delegation to NATO.
– ⁠Deputy Minister of Culture Responsible for Sports.
– ⁠Member of the Greek Delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
– ⁠Secretary of Culture and Shadow Minister of Infrastructure of Nea Dimokratia.
– ⁠President of the Konstantinos Karamanlis Institute for Democracy.
– ⁠Since July 2019, Vangelis Meimarakis is Member of the European Parliament. He was elected Vice-Chair of the EPP Group in the European Parliament, responsible for the relations with national parliaments.
– ⁠He is the Head of the Greek Delegation of Nea Dimokratia in the European Parliament.
– ⁠He is Member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET), the Subcommittee on Security and
Defense (SEDE) and the Delegation for Relations with the United States (D-US).
